BRIEF REFLECTION ON 30 YEARS OF THE CHAMPLAIN HOUSING TRUST

Today’s CHT fundraiser at Echo was special for me as I listened to Brenda Torpy give a great motivational and historical address about CHT’s remarkable growth and the meaning and importance of “home”.  My law firm represented the Burlington Community Land Trust  (CHT’ s predecessor)  for its  first 2 decades of its existence. I had the distinct honor in 1985 of drafting, along with Roger Kohn, Esq.,  BCLT’s very first land lease  that allowed BCLT homes to maintain their affordability as ownership of the homes changed hands.  (The banks didn’t know what to do with the documents and were afraid to loan, which made the whole organizational history  even more remarkable.)

Anyhow back to Brenda. We all know what an amazing and committed housing advocate she has been since the beginning. Today I learned what a great speaker and fundraiser she is.  I guess it comes easy when you believe so strongly in your mission. I tried to take a picture of her, but I much prefer the one we took together several months ago in Milton when CHT was yet again receiving $$$. This time from Sen. Leahy’s federal efforts, but no doubt initiated by Brenda!
